I’ve been on a Joanna Wang kick. There’s something about the drawl in her voice when she sings that adds character to the song. I was listening to her acoustic cover of the same song and remembered thinking that if her voice was slightly more conventionally beautiful, I probably wouldn’t have noticed her music.
Similarly, I adore her cover of Teresa Teng’s I Only Care About You/我只在乎你。 Teresa Teng’s song is a classic (and yes, I am absurdly proud that I can read most of the lyrics!). My parents played this all the time while I was growing up. Teng’s voice is very ‘classic”– sweet and well-trained and perfect for Chinese-style ballads and folk songs.
Joanna Wang’s husky voice is the polar opposite (it’s raspy yet smooth, gritty yet emotional) and brings a new modern charm to an old song. I really hope she releases a real cover of this song– it would make my day.
